Florida Legislation HJR 381, which requires voter approval in November 2012, reduces the yearly assessment cap on non-homestead property from 10 percent to 5 percent. It also gives anyone who hasn't had a homestead exemption in Florida for three years a property tax discount of 50 percent of the home's assessed value, not the exceed the median home price in that county. This additional first-time homestead owner exemption phases out for the property owner over five years while their Save Our Homes is phasing in and also is an attractive incentive to out-of-state businesses, homebuyers, and investors.

Research shows eight of the last 10 recessions have ended as a result of robust housing markets.
